My research activities over three main fields:
(a) cultural interactions in the Mediterranean world in the Iron Age (9th-7th centuries BC);
(b) the figurative culture of the Hellenistic-Roman world;
(c) research questions and methodologies regarding ancient societies.
The common epistemological background which explains my interest in these two historical phases of the ancient world - (a) and (b) – is the fact that they were pivotal moments in the historical course of antiquity, and have recently sparked a renewed interest from historians and archaeologists. These two periods are analysed in particular through the study of archaeological and figurative evidence, which have been constantly used in the analysis of the historical, political and ideological strands of these societies.
The first axis (a) was tackled with a full program of excavations and related research on one of the most significant sites of the ancient Mediterranean, Incoronata. I have a directed excavations campaigns at this site for the past 17 years and the analysis of the evidence has produced an important series of publications and doctoral theses.
The third research axis (c), which relates transversally to the previous two, is motivated by the realisation that in a historical period such as the present one, experiencing such rapid and structural transformations, there is a cultural urgency and need for a profound critical reflection on the status, philosophy and methods of the disciplines devoted to the study of the ancient world.
My teaching focuses on Classical Archaeology and Art History and in particular on two major periods, reflecting my laboratory’s research axes: the proto-archaic period (9th-7th centuries BC) and the Hellenistic period (4th-1st centuries BC).These two phases are approached through the critical analysis of archaeological, monumental, figurative and literary evidence, always firmly rooted in a historical and cultural framework.
From the point of view of methodology, my aim, through the organization and presentation of my courses, is to offer a unitary approach to the understanding of Greco-Roman civilizations, according to a historical-cultural dimension which was unique to the ancient world. This is a rare view given the current academic compartimentalization. In this sense, I offer a cross-disciplinary, multi-disciplinary and cross-sectional view of the material, cultural and ideological evidence of the ancient Mediterranean’s various communities (Greeks, Romans, Etruscans, Phoenicians, Italic communities, etc.).
Thanks to the combination of lectures and group tutorials over the two semesters, I can teach on the "longue durée" throughout an entire academic year, and provide students with a sufficiently comprehensive framework of the major historical-cultural phenomena of the ancient world, overcoming the unavoidable fragmentation of courses into small-format hour modules.
Another side to my teaching philosophy is to offer further knowledge regarding the theoretical and methodological aspects of archaeology and art history, aiming to provide students with complex and articulated tools to tackle with a criticle mind the study of ancient societies.
